Mediation – what does it cost?

Compared to the costs of Litigating through the Courts, which remains an expensive and time-consuming business, the costs of Mediation are reasonable, proportionate, and fixed.

The costs of mediation are generally fixed at the outset and paid in advance of the mediation. Both parties contribute toward the fee, usually in equal shares (see the table below). The fee includes preparation time as well as the mediation itself and will be subject to VAT at the rate applicable at the time.

As a guide charges aim to reflect the sum in dispute, and where appropriate the complexity of the issues which may necessitate additional time to allow the fullest consideration of all that the parties need to discuss.

Charges vary depending on whether the mediation is online or in person; an in-person mediation may incur room hire charges, refreshments etc. and may require the mediator to charge additional sums for travel, accommodation and sustenance. In rare cases if additional time is required additional charges may arise – again agreed in advance.

Smaller disputes are usually carried out over the phone or via video call but in circumstances where you would prefer an in-person discussion, I can arrange the use of a venue and refreshments: however, this would incur additional charges.

There is no charge for an initial enquiry – so why not call and see what mediation can do for you! But remember, mediation is voluntary and both parties need to agree to attempt mediation – a mediation can’t take place if both parties aren’t motivated to settle a dispute.

For additional hours, each party is charged at a rate of £100 per hour.
VAT will be added at the prevailing rate (currently 20%).
All fees will be agreed upon in advance so it’s clear exactly what both parties need to pay.
Except in the case of additional hours, Fees will be paid before the mediation commences.
Mediations in person are available if required; but will attract additional costs in respect of room hire and refreshments, and where appropriate the mediators travel, accommodation and sustenance expenses. Again, where possible any expenses will be agreed in advance.
